Annual Review: GoldenKey's Best SDG Solutions

From May 16 to November 28, 2024, the fifth "GoldenKey — SDG Solutions" campaign spent half a year identifying and refining corporate SDG solutions through its standards and processes.

A total of 126 solutions across 10 categories—30·60 Decarbonization Pioneer, Zero Waste, Sustainable Consumption, Action4nature, Rural Vitalization, Quality Education, Well-being for All, Tech4SDG, ESG Innovation, and Trans4future—were presented in the GoldenKey roadshow. Ultimately, 16 solutions were recommended by experts as GoldenKey · Annual Best Solutions based on video presentations.

The third (2024) "GoldenKey · SGCC Special" called for actions addressing four key challenges: Electric Power Big Data Unlocks New Value, Accelerating Low-Carbon Transition for Climate Impact, Green Grids Sustain Ecological Splendor, and Engaging in Social Governance to Tackle Complex Challenges. The event garnered 211 solutions, once again demonstrating State Grid’s strong enthusiasm and exceptional innovation in contributing to the SDGs. Among these, 73 "SGCC Solutions" were highlighted in the roadshow, with 5 recommended by experts as "GoldenKey · Annual Best Solutions" through video presentations.

These 21 "GoldenKey · Annual Best Solutions" showcased their approaches to addressing sustainable development challenges and creating multidimensional value—from roadshow narratives to action videos—embodying the spirit of "click and unlocked." They earned high praise and unanimous recognition from sustainability experts.

Here we summarize and share the 2024 "GoldenKey · Annual Best Solutions," with the hope that more companies will participate in the 2025 "GoldenKey — SDG Solutions," contributing to global and China’s sustainable development efforts.

China’s First AI Tool for Picture Books for Children with ASD

 (Alibaba Group)

Picture books play a positive role in assisting the intervention for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). However, each autistic child has unique cognitive levels and interests, making it challenging for parents and special education teachers to find suitable picture books. Guided by experts in autism intervention, the technical team of  Alibaba fine-tuned the AI model based on professional practices and academic validation,developing China’s first AI tool for picture books for children with ASD. Utilizing an agent architecture, the tool can automatically generate an audio picture book from a single-sentence summary, greatly simplifying the process for parents and teachers.

Digital Technology Empowers Social Emergency Network: Building an Urban "5-Minute Rescue Circle" 

(Tencent (Beijing/Shenzhen) Technology Co., Ltd.)

To address inefficiencies in emergency response, Tencent leverages its core strength in connectivity to develop a socialized emergency platform. By digitally integrating diverse community resources, this system enables immediate assistance to patients before ambulances arrive, transforming emergency response from a "chance encounter" model to an "on-demand rescue" service. The "5-Minute Rescue Circle" exemplifies this innovation, embodying Tencent's "Tech for Good" philosophy.

Grid-Ecology Map Harmonizes Power Grids with Nature 

(State Grid Shandong Electric Power Research Institute)

China's ecological conservation redlines cover over 30% of its land area, serving as a critical baseline for environmental security. To minimize the impact of power line construction on these protected zones, State Grid Shandong EPRI developed a strategy of 'priority avoidance, route optimization, and process control'. By utilizing satellite remote sensing and GIS technology to create a unified 'grid-ecology map', they achieve proactive avoidance of protected areas, shortest-distance crossings when unavoidable, and minimal ecological disturbance - effectively integrating environmental protection into power grid development."

Circular IKEA: Renew & Revive

(IKEA China)

To address challenges in furniture replacement such as difficult disposal, low recycling value, and opaque processes, IKEA China launched its Buyback & Resell in June 2024 across eight stores. Customers can sell their used IKEA furniture back to the company in exchange for store credit. This initiative not only gives old furniture a second life but also enables consumers to refresh their living spaces more affordably, actively supporting green consumption and the circular economy through practical action.

Design-Driven Plastic Reduction 

(LCFC (Hefei) Electronics Technology Co., Ltd)

Under its design-driven plastic reduction philosophy, LCFC implements an integrated 'product + packaging' solution. The approach includes a '1+2' product strategy (shared components and two types of recyclable plastics) and a '4+8' packaging strategy (four technological innovations and eight eco-material substitutions). These measures annually reduce virgin plastic use by over 1,100 tons, eliminate 3.5 million meters of tape and 46,000 m² of labels, while utilizing 80 tons of ocean-bound plastics and 660 tons of cardboard waste - achieving annual carbon emission reductions by over 3,300 tons.

Building a Green Mobility Ecosystem 

(DiDi Chuxing Technology)

DiDi actively supports UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by promoting urban green mobility through vehicle electrification, efficient resource utilization, low-carbon travel structures, renewable energy sources, and digital transportation systems. The company introduced '“DiDi Carbon Credits' to incentivize eco-friendly travel and launched corporate carbon tracking for flights, exploring sustainable business travel services. By building green supply chains and collaborating with ecosystem partners, DiDi is creating a new paradigm for green mobility.

Multi-Scenario Sharing of Enterprise-Level "Power Banks"

 (Lianyungang Power Supply Branch of State Grid Jiangsu Electric Power Co., Ltd.)

Large-scale mobile energy storage equipment (energy storage vehicles) offer significant advantages in resolving the conflict between enterprises’ fluctuating electricity consumption for production and transformers’ fixed power supply capacity. However, such enterprise-level shared "power banks" still remain a commercial blank. The Lianyungang Power Supply Branch accurately identified the development trend of the mobile energy storage industry, innovatively promoted market cooperation models, and took the lead in standardizing interface protocols. It also expanded various application scenarios such as regular over-capacity electricity use and emergency backup power supply, achieving the commercialization of enterprise-level "power banks."

Promoting Energy Consumption Transformation to Support the Rapid Development of NEVs

(Wuxi Power Supply Branch of State Grid Jiangsu Electric Power Co., Ltd.)

The robust growth and large-scale development of new energy vehicles(NEVs) in China have impacted grid load, power supply quality, and electricity trading. The Wuxi Power Supply Branch implemented incentive measures such as peak-valley electricity pricing for NEV owners, encouraging them to charge during off-peak grid hours and discharge to the grid during peak hours to gain benefits. This approach transforms vehicles from energy consumers to energy producers, alleviating grid supply pressure and enhancing peak-shaving capacity. It supports the rapid development of NEVs.

Lighting Up Yushu—"New Energy + New Education" Ecological Empowerment Project 

(Hangzhou Xiaoshan Power Supply Branch of State Grid Zhejiang Electric Power Co., Ltd. ,  Yushu Power Supply Branch of State Grid Qinghai Electric Power Co., Ltd., Zhejiang Dayou Group Co., Ltd.)

The "Lighting Up Yushu" project focuses on improving infrastructure and education quality by establishing a sustainability model of "new energy + new education." Through four key initiatives—"building a batch of photovoltaic power plants," "implementing a batch of crowdfunding plans," "providing a batch of teaching platforms," and "training a batch of ecological instructors"—the project has mobilized multi-party participation for 14 consecutive years. It has achieved an ecological circle of "Five Guarantees" (access to electricity, education, clothing, food, and medicine), promoting balanced educational resources in plateau regions.

Solving Power Supply Challenges in High-Altitude, Remote, and Uninhabited Areas and Islands with Green Microgrids

(Linhai Power Supply Branch of State Grid Zhejiang Electric Power Co., Ltd.)

High-altitude, remote, and uninhabited areas and islands faces fragile ecology and challenges such as high power supply costs and difficulties in power reliability. The Linhai Power Supply Branch pioneered the use of a multi-capital assessment method to analyze three scenarios—building new power lines, adding no new facilities, and constructing megawatt-level off-grid standard microgrids—integrating these analyses into decision-making. Calculations show that the microgrid scenario maximizes comprehensive ESG value, including ecological conservation, human well-being, and regional development. This innovative method provides a more holistic perspective for corporate sustainability planning.

Enabling Silent Riders to Bridge the Gap Between Silence and Sound

(Lazasi Network Technology (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. (Ele.me))

Ele.me focuses on indiscriminate care for the public and is committed to friendly and equitable employment protection. Starting by listening to the voices of silent riders—hearing-impaired delivery riders—the company aims to break down the barriers between the worlds of sound and silence. Through measures such as push notifications and prominent reminders on logistics details pages, users are informed that silent riders are providing services. The platform also creates electronic communication cards to facilitate easier pickups at restaurants, and enables one-click smart calls to contact customers. Beginning with small acts of care, Ele.me uses technology to serve people’s livelihoods.

"Lighting up Every Home · Growth Plan"—Cultivating Rural Electricians Through Multi-party Collaboration to Promote Equalization of Public Services

To address the uneven cultivation and distribution of electrician talents in remote areas, the Ningbo Qian Haijun Volunteer Service Center launched the "Lighting up Every Home · Growth Plan"—a rural training initiative that brings together the government, organizations,enterprises, universities and rural communities. This initiative provides support for talent training and service improvement in underdeveloped regions, establishing a systematic platform for the growth of rural electricians. It has trained 103 students from disadvantaged and disabled families to become rural electricians, offering a model for promoting regional equalization of public services.

Building a Digital Village System to Boost Green Rural Development

(China Mobile (Hangzhou) Information Technology Co., Ltd.)

Leveraging its digital and intelligent capabilities, China Mobile has deepened the "Digital and Intelligent Rural Vitalization Plan" and continuously upgraded its digital village solutions. It has established a digital and intelligent governance system covering over 400,000 administrative villages, improving governance efficiency. The company also provided convenient services such as telemedicine and online education, benefiting 21 million rural users; to empower  rural industries, it built more than 200 smart rural communities. The project has been recognized in the SASAC’s Bluebook on Supporting Rural Vitalization By Central State-Owned Enterprises (2022) and reported over 10,000 times by more than 1,400 media outlets.

Beautiful Countryside Encounter

(China Social Entrepreneur Foundation)

Initiated by China Social Entrepreneur Foundation in 2018, "Beautiful Countryside Encounter" is a demonstration village construction project aimed at promoting rural vitalization. Based on preserving traditional village culture and lifestyles, the project focuses on stimulating villagers’ endogenous motivation. Through discovering village resources and recreating their value, it supports villages in growing into modern "Peach Blossom Springs" where each showcases its unique beauty through systematic assistance. Over the past six years, adhering to the approach of "mutual support of counties and villages," the project has been launched in Guizhou and Guangxi, helping pilot villages become regional models and generating nearly RMB 14 million in direct economic benefits.

Creating a "Green ID" for Corporate Products

As international green trade barriers increasingly affect foreign trade enterprises, State Grid Suzhou Power Supply Company addressed challenges such as accurate carbon footprint accounting and digital management for corporate products by developing Jiangsu’s first intelligent "cloud-edge collaborative" carbon footprint management platform with real-time data collection. The platform offers one-stop carbon efficiency services, including accounting certification, energy conservation and emission reduction, inclusive trading, and financial insurance, forming a "green ID" that accurately records product carbon footprints. This supports the national dual-control carbon emission management system and enhances competitiveness in international trade.

New Energy-Saving and Carbon Reduction Solution for the Pan Asian Railway 5G Dedicated Network Based on "Train Identification and Automatic Start-Stop"

(China Mobile Group Yunnan Co., Ltd.)

With the full coverage of the 5G network along the China-Laos international railway, energy waste during idle periods of high-speed rail networks has become increasingly prominent. As a main force in communication construction, China Mobile Group Yunnan Co., Ltd. has built an international information channel radiating to Southeast Asia. Besides the innovative train identification algorithms to expand energy-saving granularity and advanced dormancy technology to enhance energy-saving depth, it also adopts time- and station-specific strategies, enabling the high-speed rail network to "nap during the day and sleep at night." This initiative builds a "green high-speed rail" brand for the Pan Asian Railway and contributes to the comprehensive green transformation of economic and social development.

Data Diagnosis: "Electricity Bill Manager" Helps Enterprises Save Money Easily

(Marketing Service Center of State Grid Zhejiang Electric Power Co., Ltd. , Wenling Power Supply Company of State Grid Zhejiang Electric Power Co., Ltd.)

To address challenges such as low power management levels, and high energy consumption, and high costs faced by many enterprises, State Grid Zhejiang Electric Power Co., Ltd. pioneered the digital service product "Electricity Bill Manager." This product translates electricity pricing policies into data models, analyzes corporate electricity usage health in real time using massive power consumption data, and automatically pushes electricity bill "health reports" and optimization suggestions. Combined with functions such as electricity strategy "price comparison" and electricity consumption prediction "diagnosis," it helps enterprises achieve cost reduction, efficiency improvement, and green transformation.

"Separate Lanes": Ensuring Safe Grid Connection for Rural PV System

The centralized surge in distributed PV system has placed enormous pressure on rural power distribution networks. The Pizhou Power Supply Branch pioneered a solution that separates power generation and supply lines, adding a "dedicated lane" for PV power generation beneath the original low-voltage lines. This achieves "traffic diversion" of pressure, meeting the urgent need for distributed PV grid connection while ensuring the quality of residential electricity supply and the safety of grid equipment. Compared to other existing solutions, this approach is more economical, practical, precise, effective, and easier to promote.

Enabling the Transition from "Exemplary Projects" to "Widespread Adoption" of Electrification in Public Sector Vehicles

(Ningbo Power Supply Company of State Grid Zhejiang Electric Power Co., Ltd.)

During the current transition to electric vehicles in the public sector, challenges such as high vehicle replacement costs for enterprises, insufficient charging infrastructure, and inadequate vehicle maintenance services still persist. The Ningbo Power Supply Company has introduced a "one vehicle, one strategy" service model and established a one-stop platform connecting automakers, users,government and power grid. Exemplary projects serve to lead and inspire, while widespread adoption projects aim to benefit the public. Through comprehensive electrification, the initiative supports government policies and assists enterprises in realizing the goals of carbon peaking and carbon neutrality.

Enterprise-Government-Public Collaboration in Windbreaking and Sand Fixation: Writing a Green Legend of "West-East Electricity Transmission"

(Ultra-High Voltage Company of State Grid Ningxia Electric Power Co., Ltd.)

Approximately 20% of the towers in the Ningxia section of the ±660 kV Yindong HVDC transmission project are located in desert areas. Sand damage not only threatens the safe operation of the power lines but also inconveniences local production and daily life. Since 2012, State Grid Ningxia Ultra-High Voltage Company has collaborated with local governments and communities through a "tripartite collaboration" model—joint assessment, joint governance, and joint maintenance—to combat desertification and stabilize sand. This effort has transformed the desert beneath the power lines into an oasis, enhanced local biodiversity, and supported regional ecological conservation while ensuring the stable transmission of green and clean energy.

✅ Engaging in Social Governance to Tackle Complex Challenges

"Rescue Power Towers" Establish Wild Escape Routes

(Ultra-High Voltage Branch and Shaoxing Power Supply Company of State Grid Zhejiang Electric Power Co., Ltd.)

In collaboration with emergency management agencies, social rescue organizations, and other stakeholders, and leveraging existing power corridors and visual monitoring devices along transmission lines, a "Wild Emergency Rescue Alliance" has been established. This network uses the main control room of an ultra-high voltage station as the "rescue center," connects 45,000 high-definition "sky eye" monitoring devices on power towers as the medium, and designates rescue power towers as support points. The alliance has created four major application scenarios, eliminated communication dead zones in remote areas and solved the challenge of "difficult positioning," reducing the average wilderness rescue time from 2-5 days to as little as 4-8 hours.
