BOE's desertification control solution debuts at UNCCD COP17

Release time:2026-08-19Source:China Sustainability TribuneAuthor:China Sustainability Tribune

At UNCCD COP17 Side Event, BOE's 200MW Pasture and PV-Storage + Sand Control Comprehensive Project in Inner Mongolia debuts as an inspiring solution, contributing China's "technology + ecology" approach to global land restoration.

On August 18, 2026, at the "Technology for Desertification Control: Frontier Exploration and Application " side event held at the China Pavilion of the 17th Session of the Conference of the Parties (COP17) to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), the report Desertification Control and Land Restoration – Inspiring Solutions from Chinese Enterprises was officially released. BOE Energy's 200 MW Pasture and PV-Storage + Sand Control Comprehensive Project located in Sunite Right Banner, Xilingol League, Inner Mongolia, was selected as a representative case in the "Renewable Energy / PV for Desertification Control" chapter.

This marks another internationally recognized achievement for BOE in the field of sustainable development, following its previous inclusions in the Initiative for Building Sustainable Brands" cases, the Climate Solutions from Chinese Enterprises,  and the report, Implementing the GDI, Advancing the SDGs: Inspiring Solutions from Chinese Enterprises. It not only validates the global influence of BOE's "ONE" sustainability brand but also demonstrates that Chinese technology enterprises are providing replicable, adaptable Chinese solutions for global land degradation governance through systemic "technology + ecology" innovation.

From "impact reduction" to "value creation": redefining the relationship between renewable energy and ecological governance

Leveraging its capabilities in technology integration, project operation, and industrial synergy, BOE has developed an integrated model that combines PV, energy storage, desertification control and pastoral activities in Xilingol League, Inner Mongolia.

The project coordinates energy development and land ecological functions throughout the entire process—from planning and construction to operation. Raising panel height enables both power generation above and grazing below. The shade and windbreak effects of the panels improve the surface microclimate, promoting vegetation recovery while advancing renewable energy development and desertification control in tandem. The project also includes an energy storage system to improve renewable energy accommodation. Through operations and maintenance services and pastoral integration, it drives local employment and industrial development.

The report highlights that the innovative approach of this solution lies in breaking with the traditional divide between renewable energy and ecological restoration. It represents a shift from "minimizing land impacts" to "generating land gains," transforming degraded land from a single-purpose resource extraction space into a collaborative space for creating ecological, energy, and livelihood values.

For arid and semi-arid regions worldwide, particularly developing countries, BOE's solution demonstrates that enterprises can incorporate nature and land considerations into business decisions, using the long-term returns of renewable energy projects to sustain ecological restoration. The integrated pathway of "renewable energy development + land restoration + livelihood improvement"  offers an adaptable and replicable model for synchronizing energy transition, desertification control, and community development.

It is worth noting that this solution aligns with BOE's "zero-carbon factory" case, the industry's first, shared at COP30. From "zero-carbon" breakthroughs in manufacturing to "gain" innovations in ecological governance, BOE is upgrading sustainability from a single-dimensional corporate initiative to a systemic solution covering production operations and ecological restoration across the full spectrum.

The "ONE" brand as the core: Another milestone in sustainable development

As a leading technology innovation enterprise, BOE launched the display industry's first sustainability brand "ONE" (Open Next Earth) in April 2025, embodying the three core brand values of "Open," "Next," and "Earth." BOE systematically fulfills its corporate citizenship responsibilities across education, environment, health, and culture.

This selection of BOE's desertification control solution in the authoritative case collection under the UN Convention to Combat Desertification further demonstrates BOE's integration of sustainability into business practices, creating ecological value through the dual drivers of "technology + ecology."

Under the integrated "Organization, Brand, Strategy" sustainability framework, BOE has systematically transformed sustainability into brand competitiveness while achieving both forward-looking strategic leadership and external ecological synergy. From building the display industry's first "zero-carbon factory," to close collaboration with international organizations including UNESCO, UNDP, and UN-Habitat, and now to this innovative solution of leveraging renewable energy for land restoration, BOE is elevating sustainability from corporate action to industry consensus. It provides a Chinese model for the global sustainable business ecosystem, demonstrating how sustainability can be transformed into core competitiveness and long-term value.

Looking ahead, guided by the "ONE" sustainability brand, BOE will continue to work with global partners to to embed sustainability into technological innovation and global collaboration, collectively building an open, win-win global sustainable business ecosystem for a better future.
